These bales of hemp straw are then stored in dry conditions, typically at the processor's facilities, until further processing.
To preserve the quality of hemp seeds and prevent them from heating or moulding, immediate drying and aeration of the grains are crucial, ideally beginning with the drying process in the field. Under wet weather conditions, the seeds should be dried in a grain dryer and aerated in grain bins (Government of Alberta – Agriculture and Forestry, 2020).
The best seed quality can be achieved through a slow drying process at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C with high volumes of airflow. When the seed moisture content reaches around 9%, the grains are safe to be stored for 2 to 3 years in bins or tote bags. Beyond this period, the quality usually declines. Conversely, a moisture content below 9% could cause the seeds to crack (IHPM – Agriculture and Resource Development, 2022).
