Whole hemp seeds contain approximately 20-25% protein. Hemp protein has a favourable amino acid profile and is well digestible for humans. These characteristics, along with the fact that protein can be extracted as a byproduct after oil extraction, make hemp protein a financially viable alternative to animal-based proteins. There are a multitude of methods for hemp protein extraction, one of the most common is the alkaline extraction coupled with isoelectric precipitation from the defatted hemp press cake. After extraction and purification, the hemp protein can be marketed in various forms, such as protein powder.
