Hackling involves passing the hemp fibres through a series of comb-like tools to further refine and separate the fibres. This results in longer, finer, and more uniform fibres that are aligned and ready for spinning. This process allows the fibres to be blended with other fibres, e.g. linen or cotton and be used in existing machinery. The long fibres are then brought to a uniform length for further processing. Besides the long fibres, short fibres are separated as a side product.
