It is a process that further cleans the fibres from residues of the inner wooden parts by brushing or beating the fibres. This is typically done with mechanical scutching machines that beat the fibres to remove the hurd material. Shorter fibres can further be processed into tougher yarns, hemp tow or be handled in a process called “Cottonisation” for textile uses (see 2.3). Other applications for short fibres are for example the use in composites where they improve the tensile strength of the product.
