The remaining woody particles, or hurds (shives), are separated from the fibres during the decortication and scutching process. Hurds can be used in a variety of ways:
Animal Bedding: Due to their absorbent nature, hurds are commonly used as bedding for livestock.
Building Materials: Hemp hurds are often used in products like hempcrete, a sustainable building material, and fiberboard.
Biocomposites: Hurds are processed and used as a reinforcement material in biocomposite products, often in the automotive and construction industries.
Mulching: Due to their ability to retain moisture, hemp hurds are also used as mulch in gardening and agriculture.
